This was an adaptation of the novel by Cao Xueqin (1715 or 1724-1764 AD).
After the deaths of her parents, Lin Daiyu was sent to live with her grandmother in the Jia family. There she met her cousin Jia Baoyu and fell in love with each other. However, almost everyone in the Jia family disliked Lin because of her poor health and gloomy personality. Lin's maid Zi Juan thought Jia was among those who disliked Lin and wanted to test how much he loved her by saying that Lin was soon returning to her hometown, Suzhou. Jia fell ill almost immediately on hearing the news.

Then the Jia family arranged a marriage for Jia and another cousin Xue Baochai with the hope that he could get well soon. Shocked and grief-stricken, Lin passed away on the evening of Jia's wedding. Jia did not recognise his bride was Xue until the latest moment, and he rushed to Lin's funeral hall to send his condolence. Soon he realised how corrupt the Jia family was and left to become a monk.
