Accounting clerk Tao Zutai was a hardworking man well respected by his manager Mr Fan. After a chat one day Tao thought he was going to be promoted and went home to tell his wife and five children. They all demanded expensive presents and Tao promised happily. When Tao returned to the bank the next day, he was extremely disappointed to learn that the position of sales manager had been taken by Hu Jinan, an ally of the chairman. Seeing that his wife and children were celebrating with joy, Tao refrained from telling them the truth. On Sunday Tao took his children to the Peak. His eldest son Xinchu, daughter Guiru were playing a ball game with their siblings. By mistake the ball hit Mrs Fan, who was accompanied by Hu. It was Mrs Fan who had an affair with Hu and the chairman, who made Hu the sales manager at his bank. Tao reckoned that there might be something unusual between them and urged his children to leave. Meanwhile, Hu was attracted to Guiru's youth and beauty. One day Guiru was being harassed by Wang. Hu helped Guiru get rid of Wang, and invited her to a party at the chairman's house. Guiru was a greedy girl and agreed happily.

The chairman, Hu and other guests were all attracted to Guiru. Jealous of her vanity, Mrs Fan offered to help the chairman woo Guiru, and asked him to terminate Tao so that her secrets would not be uncovered. Tao was extremely depressed for being fired. At home he could no longer hold his tempers when he saw his wife spending too much and Guiru going out all the time with Hu and others from the bank. But nothing changed. Tao made an effort to find a new job. He finally became a clown in a circus. But Mrs Tao was suspicious that he had a mistress outside and asked Xinchu to follow his father.

The following day Xinchu saw a dancing girl helping his father who had fainted and was convinced that his father was unfaithful to his mother and ran home to report. Mrs Tao then brought all the children to the circus except Guiru, who had gone out with Hu, Mrs Fan and the chairman. Guiru was made drunk and brought to a hotel. Fortunately Wang had followed Guiru and saved her from being harassed by the chairman. He then brought Guiru to the circus to meet her mother. In the circus the audience threw the balls at Tao, who finally exhausted and collapsed. Guiru recognised that he was father and rushed to the stage to help. Mrs Tao and her children also appeared from the backstage after hearing the noise. They all felt sorry for Tao and promised to be good boys and girls.
