A Japanese journalist Syunsuke Yamashita who worked in Hong Kong accompanied a Chinese friend Li Shaoxing to watch a performance by famous singer Shen Lihua. Before the performance ended Yamashita received a call from his editor in Japan, asking him to follow up the breaking news that a famous Japanese dancer Setsuko Irie was running away with her lover to France via Hong Kong. Yamashita had never met Irie and had no idea how he could fulfill this assignment. Meanwhile, Li brought him to the backstage and announced that he would marry Shen very soon. He went on to ask Yamashita help find Shen's father, a Japanese man called Ogawa. Yamashita was extremely annoyed. The next morning Yamashita went to the airport to look for Irie. He mistook another Japanese journalist Keiko Amemiya as Irie and followed her wherever she went. Amemiya had already made an appointment with Irie and was eager to make an exclusive story. Instead of telling Yamashita her true identity, Amemiya gave him an interview. When they met Amemiya noticed that Irie was sneaking out of the hotel, possibly to meet her lover. Amemiya tried to follow her, and prompted Yamashita to follow her also. On the Peak, Amemiya interviewed Irie and her lover in French, but told Yamashita that they were both her friends and asked him to take a picture of the three. Yamashita agreed happily. Yamashita's colleagues in Japan were surprised to see his pictures of Amemiya. Editor Nagahama ordered him to return to Japan. Meanwhile, Li and Shen had their wedding and were going to Tokyo for honeymoon. They went on the same flight as Yamashita. When Yamashita found that Amemiya was also on the flight, he pointed an accusing finger at her but she rebuked. She went on to talk to Li and Shen, and promised to help Shen find her father. Yamashita was uneasy about Amemiya's enthusiasm. When in Tokyo Amemiya gave Li and Shen an itinerary and wrote excessively on Shen's search for her father. Li and Shen were extremely upset. To compete, editor Nagahama then asked Yamashita to invite Shen to perform in a filmed music show. Shen promised for Yamashita's sake but finally could bear this extravaganza no more that she left with her husband. As Amemiya and Yamashita co-operated to find the Li couple, they became lovers themselves. Yamashita finally found his Hong Kong friends and brought them home. Rumours were brewing in Japan after Amemiya's reports were published. One day, an old man called Ogawa appeared and claimed that Shen was his daughter. At the press conference when Shen and Ogawa were supposed to recognise each other, surprisingly, Ogawa knew nothing about Shen's mother. He explained that after reading the newspaper he had mocked that Shen looked like his daughter. His neighbours misunderstood his words and brought him to Tokyo. Despite her disappointment, Shen agreed to call Ogawa "father." Before her departure with Li, she also told Yamashita that she was looking forward to receiving him and his bride for honeymoon in Hong Kong.
