This was adopted from a novel by Wang Lan.

In Tianjin before the Second Sino-Japanese War, Tang Qi was an orphan adopted by her grandmother Madame Gao, who had two sons and a daughter. Her eldest son was an opportunist very close to the Japanese. The second son was studying in Japan, leaving his wife at home. The youngest daughter Gao Danqiu was engaged to Ji Zhenya.

Once when the Gaos hosted a banquet to celebrate Madame Gao's birthday, Ji and his parents, sister Huiya and cousin Zhang Xingya were all invited. Tang and Zhang were impressed with each other. Soon they met again in the skating rink and fell in love.

One day Tang dated with Zhang at the rink but was harassed by a group of gangsters. Zhang fought with them but was seriously injured. As a qualified nurse Tang took good care of him and expressed her love for him. She did not return home until the next morning.

The eldest son of Gao had wanted to marry Tang to a senior Japanese official to please the Japanese but Tang refused firmly. He then asked his mother to put Tang under house arrest. With the help of Huiya, Tang and Zhang managed to write to each other although they could not meet.

Soon Tang found a job in a hospital. She asked if Zhang could run away with her. Zhang agreed, but was finally stopped by Huiya. Tang was so disappointed that she went alone to work in the hospital, where she was raped by Director Chang. This had become a talk of town and Madame Gao announced that Tang was no longer a member of her family. Tang was also expelled from the hospital and became a nightclub singer.

He Li, brother of Zhang's good friend He Meng, was a patriot who recruited volunteers to work against the Japanese. Zhang wanted to bring Tang with him, but He reckoned that Zhang would be distracted if Tang were present. He asked Tang to stay in Tianjin. On the day of departure, Zhang was disappointed that Tang did not show up. Later he received a letter from Tang saying that this was a revenge for his failure on promise earlier. Zhang then left in despair with the He brothers.
