During the early years of the Republic, an old scholar Zhu Moan was living with his daughter Yuzhen and son Yujie. One day Yuzhen and Yujie were looking out of the courtyard walls and saw some troops passing by. Captain Xue Yisheng was astonished by Yuzhen's beauty. Xue and his men encamped at the ancestral hall of the Zhu's. Yuzhen rushed to the hall and asked him to leave. Xue insisted to stay and Yuzhen left angrily to tell her father. Zhu decided to sue Xue at the county government, and forbade Yuzhen to leave the residence anymore, which was considered a girl's improper behaviour. Xue asked his servant Baosheng to think of a way that could let him see Yuzhen again. On the following day, Baosheng pretended to be a servant and was employed in the Zhu's residence. Meanwhile, Wang Po brought in Zhang Ma, a widow newly acquired as the maid of Yuzhen. In fact she had a secret desire of becoming the second wife of Zhu. Having overheard their conversation, Baosheng appeared and discussed a plot with them. One day when Baosheng knew that Yuzhen was sick, he asked Xue to disguise himself as a doctor. Zhu insisted that his daughter could see no stranger and put a screen between her and Xue. Xue was so excited to have touched Yuzhen's hand that he unmasked his identity. Zhu beat him badly and kicked him out. Meanwhile, Zhang tried to woo Zhu but failed.

After that Yuzhen could hardly forget Xue. She sneaked into the ancestral hall to see Xue as encouraged by Zhang. After a long talk they found that they were actually cousins who had never met but whose parents had arranged marriage between them since childhood. Xue was overwhelmed with joy and immediately rushed to see Zhu and proposed to marry Yuzhen. Meanwhile, Zhang had developed a passion with Baosheng and decided to marry him on the day of Xue and Yizhen's wedding.
