The clever and arrogant Jinfeng was brought up by her widower father Du Laohai. A young villager Laizi was her secret admirer but Erniuzi was the one she loved. One day when Jinfeng was herding her sheep on the hill with Erniuzi, she met the Shi brothers. The younger brother, Laojiu, was attracted to Jinfeng's beauty and went to her house to see her in the evening, with an excuse of playing mahjong with her father. At the mahjong table Pan Sixi was caught red-handed of cheating. His widowed sister-in-law, Xiaoyu, pleaded for him. Seeing that Laoqi, the elder Shi brother, was thirsty for her beauty, Pan had a dirty trick in mind.

Jinfeng was outrageous to see that Erniuzi was starring at Xiaoyu all night. She kicked him out but followed him to see if he was still in love with Xiaoyu. Waiting for Erniuzi at the doorstep Xiaoyu tried to borrow some money from him. Jinfeng was convinced that Erniuzi was unfaithful to her and refused to speak to him the following day. Meanwhile, Laojiu proposed to Jinfeng. Erniuzi was heartbroken to hear that Jinfeng was going to marry. Then Jinfeng came to him and demanded an explanation. They were plunged into a fierce quarrel and parted with anger.

After that Jinfeng rushed to Xiaoyu's house for a showdown, but was shocked to know that Xiaoyu had been raped by Laoqi and her son was thrown to death. Jinfeng asked Laizi for help, but before their return Xiaoyu hanged herself with Laoqi's snuff bottle in her hand. Erniuzi mistook that Jinfeng had forced Xiaoyu to kill herself and demanded her to tell the truth. Jinfeng refused because she had promised Xiaoyu to keep it a secret. Laizi then became their ombudsman and they finally returned to good terms. Erniuzi even went in town to tell his aunt that he was marrying Jinfeng. However, his aunt was sick and he had to stay two days longer to take care of her. He asked Pan to pass a message to Jinfeng of the delay.

Pan returned home and told Jinfeng that Erniuzi was marrying someone else in town and forced her to accept Laojiu's proposal. Jinfeng refused firmly and rushed to the Shi brothers to argue. She showed them the snuff bottle of Laoqi and accused him of causing Xiaoyu's death. The Shi brothers had no choice but gave up their desire for her. Two days later when Erniuzi returned home, Laizi accused him of being unfaithful to Jinfeng. Knowing that it might be resulted from Pan's tricks, Erniuzi rushed to explain to Jinfeng. Meanwhile Pan was threatening Jinfeng to give him Laoqi's snuff bottle. Laizi was outrageous at Pan's wickedness and engaged in a fight with him. Finally the two fell from the cliff. On their way home Jinfeng and Erniuzi mourned sadly for Laizi's death although their marriage was secured.
