Mei Jie was an orphan adopted by her uncle but maltreated by her aunt and cousin. The old servant then sent Mei to an orphanage and became a worker there to take care of the poor little girl. Soon Mei grew up and became a tutor for a rich man Luo Shide's son. Although Mei had not seen Luo since her arrival but had enjoyed a good time with the housekeeper Mrs Bi. One day when Mei and Luo's son were playing in the courtyard, she found that there was a brass-wired fort on the other side of the garden wall. She also saw that food and drink were sent to the fort, indicating that someone must have been locked inside. Her suspicions were fuelled after seeing that Luo being blackmailed by his wife's brother at night.

Knowing that Mei had grown up in an orphanage, Luo did not expect that Mei would do a good job. But his views changed rapidly after seeing that his son and Mei had got along well. Mei had been told that Luo had quite a temper but was impressed by his kindness to her. She even developed a secret passion for him. One day Luo left home without leaving any message. Mei was so disappointed that she tried to concentrate on teaching Luo's son, but at the same time rejected an offer from the orphanage where she had grown up. Soon Mei was told that Luo was preparing for his second marriage and had asked Mrs Bi to decorate the house. Upon Luo's return his wife's brother appeared and blackmailed him again, but Luo refused, saying that he was going to marry someone else. After that he proposed to Mei. Mei was shocked but agreed with joy.

On their wedding day, Mrs Luo's brother appeared and insulted Luo again. Outrageous at his dirty trick, Luo accused him of cheating himself to marry his sister, who was seriously mentally ill. She had been locked up in the fort for many years while Luo announced that she had died. Guests were astonished. Mei was so disappointed that she returned to the orphanage to become a teacher. Some months later a boy was admitted to the orphanage. Mei was shocked to see that he was the son of Luo. Since her departure Luo had done nothing but made himself drunk night and day. One day his ex-wife set the fort and the residence on fire, during which Luo lost his sight and broke one leg. Mei rushed to the Luo's residence to see him. They could hardly utter a word seeing each other again.
