Once upon a time in Baoding of Hebei province there was a rich man Shi Boan. He had two daughters Lifang and Lifen, who were in love with Wei Zhonghua, son of Shi's good friend Wei Yizhai, and Ma Chengji respectively.

One day Ma came to Shi's house to announce that Wei was engaged to his cousin Han Mulan. Saddened and surprised, Lifang asked Wei to run away with her. Wei refused, prompting Lifang to make a fuss of it, which then caught the attention of a guest Xia Zongde.

Mulan's brother Han Youmei was a secret admirer of Lifang. He went to pacify her and proposed to her. Eager to avenge on Zhonghua, Lifang agreed almost immediately, but insisted that they should live with her family after wedding.

War intensified at the north soon after Lifang's marriage. Knowing that Zhonghua was going to study in Japan, Lifang forced her husband to follow suit. However, Youmei was soon killed in an earthquake, leaving Lifang pregnant at home. She then moved to Youmei's home in Tianjin for mourning. Later Lifang gave birth to a son called Xiaomei.

Three years passed in loneliness for Lifang. She was envious of her sister-in-law because Zhonghua wrote frequently to his wife. One day when she was shopping Lifang was attracted to Xia's political clout in the city.

When Zhonghua returned the Wei family went to receive him in Tianjin. Lifang was determined to get Zhonghua back.

As the north was plunged into turmoil Zhonghua wanted to join the revolutionists in the south. His father also gave his consent. However, Zhonghua was arrested on his way. Mulan was extremely worried.

Back in Baoding, the troops looted the houses of Shi and Wei's. Shi went insane while his wife and Wei were killed, leaving Lifang in anguish.

Lifang asked Xia to help and investigate the whereabouts of Zhonghua. He was later found held in custody in Baoding. Xia then escorted Lifang and Mulan to Baoding, where he also freed Zhonghua. Lifang was determined to restore the family business and went to Beijing to seek loans from Xia. Zhonghua then returned to Tianjin with his wife.

In Beijing Lifang found that Xia had been held by the military. She then met Ma, who used to be in love with her sister. She told Ma a lie that her sister had then turned to her cousin Lu Hongda. In disappointment Ma agreed to marry Lifang. She then persuaded Ma to buy an old chinaware factory in the suburb, and invited Zhonghua to become a manager. Zhonghua then set off for Beijing with his wife.

Meanwhile, Xia was released and started chasing after Lifang. He bought the chinaware factory from Ma for 3,000 yuan and put it under the name of Lifang. Soon Ma was killed in a bombing and Xia proposed to Lifang. Lifang agreed with an idea of engulfing his wealth.

A year later Lifang gave birth to a girl. Regretting that she had a child with someone she did not love, Lifang refused to share a room with Xia since then. Three years passed. Xia was furious to know that Lifang still loved Zhonghua, and suggested to acquire the chinaware factory so that she could see Zhonghua no more. Lifang agreed on condition that Xia must not share a room with her. Xia had no choice but transferred his ownership of the factory to Zhonghua.

One day when Xia found that his daughter had fallen to death due to Lifang's negligence, he was determined to leave. Soon Mulan died. At her dying bed Mulan asked Lifang to treasure Xia's love for her, but Lifang would not listen. After Mulan's death Lifang told Zhonghua how much she had loved him, but Zhonghua refused. Remembering Mulan's words, Lifang rushed home to see that Xia was leaving.
