Magazine editor Yang Sisheng came across a portrait of Du Zhenzhu in a studio and would like to borrow it as a cover photo. Studio owner said Yang must seek the consent of Zhenzhu first. However, Yang did not know where to find Zhenzhu. Back in his office, he was excited to learn that Huang Dexing's wife Hupo was Zhenzhu's sister and asked Huang to arrange a meeting for him. During their meeting Du Zijian and his wife had a good impression of Yang. Yang was also happy to get Zhenzhu's consent to use her photo on the cover. Du and his wife wanted to marry Zhenzhu to Yang but had not told him that Zhenzhu was dumb. Since their meeting Yang and Zhenzhu exchanged letters frequently and their passions grew. One day Zhenzhu asked Yang to see her at home to tell him the truth. When Zhenzhu showed him the words "I can't speak" on a piece of paper, Yang thought Zhenzhu was too shy to speak of marriage. Her dumbness was finally gone. Zhenzhu's story soon became the talk of town. Yang's biggest advertiser Qian Yongming forced Yang to invite Zhenzhu to become the model of his latest advertisements. Zhenzhu rebuked but Qian withdrew all his advertising with Yang's magazine, making Yang virtually unemployed. Zhenzhu then accepted an offer from a electrical retailer to host a quiz show on radio in exchange for a year's advertising subscription to Yang's magazine.

At home Yang was irritated to see that Zhenzhu was busy all day long. He even went to the radio station to quarrel with Zhenzhu on air. Du went to the radio station to pacify his daughter. Zhenzhu told his father all she knew and went home with him. Back at home Yang was annoyed to see Zhenzhu's sister Shanhu rehearsing a play with her classmates, the printing company urging its bills to be paid and people from a record company and the women's club looking for Hupo. He wrote a letter and left to find Du. When he saw Du he was told what Zhenzhu had actually done for him and returned home immediately to reconcile with his wife. But Zhenzhu was not there. Meanwhile, Mrs Du and Hupo brought Zhenzhu home, and scolded Yang for making Zhenzhu angry, so much so that she could hardly utter a word. It took Yang great efforts to reconcile with his wife and make her speak again.
