Once upon a time there was an old fisherman at Jade Bay, Kong Chunfa, who had two daughters. The eldest, Ying, was 18 years old and Kong was eager to have her married so that the son-in-law could succeed his business. One day Kong rescued a young man Huang Zijian at sea and took him home. Ying took good care of Huang and the two soon fell in love with each other. Soon there were rumours in the village about Huang and Ying. Ying asked him to leave but told him it was for the sake of his reputation. Huang later returned with expensive gifts to Kong and Ying in gratitude of their hospitality. Ying was so grateful that she vowed eternal love with Huang.

Meanwhile, Huang's father had already arranged marriage for him and Du Jiazhen, daughter of their boss. Huang was outrageous to see the proposal gifts when returned home and rejected the engagement. He went on to say that he would rather work overseas to marry Du. Before departure he returned to Jade Bay to farewell to Ying, saying that he would marry no one but her. Unfortunately Huang failed to secure work overseas. The only comfort to his misery was exchanging letters with Ying. One day Du found Huang's whereabouts and bribed his landlord to confiscate all letters to Ying. Later Huang made himself heard in the art circles and held a painting exhibition, where he met Du. Huang sneered at Du's arrogance and pledged his love for Ying. Du was so envious that she wrote a letter to Ying in Huang's name, saying that he would not return and marry her. This was an unbearable blow to Ying and plunged her into mental illness. Kong was extremely worried but could do nothing. When Huang was prepared to return and marry Ying, Du went to see Ying first and tried to bribe her to give up Huang. Ying firmly refused. Until then Du was convinced that nothing could part Huang and Ying and returned home bitterly. As Huang arrived at Jade Bay the news came that Ying had fallen from a cliff but the duo finally managed to reunite with the help of other villagers.
